Two weeks before Deepavali, something changes in the house. The fans are looked at differently. The loft is opened. Someone says the word "almirah" in a tone usually reserved for police inquiries.
Clean-up season has begun. Lakshmi only visits clean homes, and nobody wants to be the reason she skipped yours. So the whole family is drafted, and every year, the same characters report for duty.
1. The Commander

She was up at six. She has a list. She has a duster in one hand and your schedule in the other. She hands out instructions all day, and she takes none.
Wear it: No Cautions, No Suggestions, No Instructions, No Advice. I Believe In Myself
2. The Headphone Helper

They agreed to help. They put on headphones "for motivation." Now no "come here and hold this ladder" can reach them. They are cleaning one shelf, very slowly, perfectly in rhythm.
Wear it: Addicted.
3. The Human Search Engine

"Where is the cello tape?" They don't look up. "Second shelf, behind the Horlicks bottle, under the warranty cards." Nobody has ever found anything in this house without asking them first.
Wear it: Google Doesn't Have All The Answers, Come To Me
4. The Archaeologist

Behind the almirah, they find a 2011 electricity bill, a Nokia charger, one earring, three rubber bands, and a remote for a TV the family no longer owns. Each item is held up to the light and announced to the house.
Wear it: Living Life Is An Adventure
5. The Dry-Fruit Box Detective

On the top shelf, still sealed, is last year's dry-fruit gift box. Someone gave it to us. We had planned to give it to someone else. It is now an heirloom. They check the expiry date, look around the room, and quietly put it back.
Wear it: The World Is Full Of Nuts, I'm One Exception!!
6. The Paper-Kadai Negotiator

Six months of newspapers, tied with twine, are carried to the scale. "Only four kilo? Weigh it again." The scale is wrong. The rate is wrong. The negotiation takes longer than the cleaning did.
Wear it: I May Not Be Always Right But I Am Never Wrong
7. The Vanishing Act

The moment the ladder comes out for the ceiling fan, they are gone. Bathroom, terrace, "urgent call." They return exactly when the sweets come out, looking deeply tired.
Wear it: Some Call It Laziness, I Call It Deep Thought
8. The Cassette Detour

They open one old box and find a cassette. Then a walkman. Then an Ilaiyaraaja tape with handwritten labels. Cleaning stops. The song plays. The box is still on the floor two hours later.
Wear it: Music Is My Life
9. The Dust Blower

Why wipe when you can blow? They lean over the shelf, take a deep breath, and redistribute the dust evenly across the room. Technically, the shelf is clean.
Wear it: Pranayama Wind Energy
10. The Puja Room Keeper

They clean the puja room last and alone, because nobody else is trusted with it. Lamps polished, kolam drawn, and Ganesha placed carefully beside Lakshmi, because nothing begins without him.
Wear it: Embossed Ganesha
Then comes Naraka Chaturdashi morning. Oil bath before sunrise, new clothes, the first cracker from the neighbour's house at 4:30 am, and a box of murukku that the family will defend from guests. The almirah is back against the wall, and whatever is behind it will wait until next year.
Happy Deepavali from Offbeat. May your lamps stay lit and your loft stay closed.
